Exercising optimism helps you take ownership of your reactions. It makes people happy, which has a host of other positive effects. We use the term EXERCISE because it takes work — actively seeking out a perspective of possibility.
Optimists generally approach life with a positive outlook, while pessimists tend to expect the worst. Optimists go into new situations with high expectations, while pessimists keep low expectations to prepare for negative outcomes
The Components of Exercise Optimism
Six Seconds’ Emotional Intelligence test, SEI, explores three dimensions to Exercise Optimism: duration, scope, and power.
The split between optimists and pessimists is pretty much night and day. Optimists generally approach life with a positive outlook, while pessimists tend to expect the worst. Optimists go into new situations with high expectations, while pessimists keep low expectations to prepare for negative outcomes.
A growth mindset is defined as the student’s belief that intelligence can be developed through hard work, effective strategies, and support from others. The opposite would be a fixed mindset.
Three steps to cultivating a Growth Mindset:
1: Find a piece of paper + pen. to discover your ideas.
2: Identify a challenging situation you are currently living in. If you are stuck, you could think of one that leaves you feeling hopeless or intimidated. Maybe scary or unhappy.
3: What is the unlikely gratitude in your situation? Pose this question to yourself: This situation is perfectly crafted for your unique growth. How? What are your bigger goals in life, and how could this situation serve as rungs on a ladder toward those goals? The model I use focus the attention in three areas:
Name your Feeling, Identify options and see the Why, the life purpose importance.
